Marmaton Valley High’s Wildcats battled back from a 5-0 hole to open Monday’s Kansas Class 2-1A Regional Baseball Tournament game. At home they tied the game by the third inning on their way to a 9-7 victory.
The Wildcats defeated Oswego High’s Indians to move into the semifinal round today. The regional tournament is hosted by Pittsburg-St. Mary’s Colgan High at Pittsburg’s Jaycee Park.
Marmaton Valley (7-12) plays Colgan (16-3) at 2 o’clock today. Jayhawk-Linn (10-10) defeated Chetopa 16-1 Monday and takes on St. Paul (13-3) at 4:30.
The semifinal winners play the championship game at 7 o’clock.
Marmaton Valley took a 7-6 lead in the fourth. Oswego tied the game up in the top of the sixth. The Wildcats responded by scoring two runs in their half of the inning.
Jimmy Frye and the Wildcats retired the Indians in the top of the seventh for the 9-7 win. Frye allowed six hits, walked one, hit three batters and struck out six.
“Jimmy did a great job pitching but in the first inning we didn’t make the plays behind him and let three unearned runs score,” said Derek Scharff, MVHS head coach.
“We had a little team meeting before we batted in the first and told the guys ‘We are going to see what kind of fight we have in us — you can lie down or show them what you got.’ The guys responded well.”
Daylen Houk led the Wildcat offense with three doubles and a single, going 4-for-4. Frye was 3-for-3 with three base hits.
Cole Becker hit a double and two singles. Sage Hall had a double and a single. Austin Harrison, Ryan Smith and Levi Ramsey each had a base hit.
YATES CENTER High is hosting a 2011 Kansas Class 2-1A Regional Baseball Tournament today. The host team won by forfeit, 7-0, over Elk Valley Monday.
West Elk shut out Altoona-Midway 15-0 Monday.
Today’s semifinal matchups are Yates Center (6-15) against top-seeded Sedan (20-0) at 2 o’clock and Humboldt High’s Cubs (16-5) playing West Elk (12-8) at 4:30.
The semifinal winners play at 7 o’clock for the championship.
On the line in both regional tournaments are berths to the Kansas Class 2-1A state tournament, May 27-28, in Emporia.
UNIONTOWN High’s Eagles did not land very well in their first Kansas Class 3A Regional Baseball Tournament.
The Eagles lost 13-3 to Central Heights High’s Vikings Monday in opening-round play at Richmond. The Eagles finish at 6-13.
